Pinene is a monoterpene hydrocarbon, with several isomers. The most important of those are alpha- and beta-pinene.

Molecular formula

C10 H16

Molar mass

136.24 g

Physical state

insoluble in water

Both isomers are found in pine needles, hemp, dill, fennel, coriander, oregano, and caraway. Alpha-pinene is the main component of turpentine oil (approx. 60%).

Medicinal properties

Pinenes are medically interesting due to their positive influence on the adrenal cortex and the vegetative system. They may also have antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects and seem to influence the human fat or protein metabolism.
